Queen of the Cage

I stepped out of the fae portal into the soundproof basement, knocking the snow off my arms. Having the freedom to visit my parents was great. Basking in the winter chill was better, though.

I’d never felt as strong as I did after surrounding myself with the purest form of unpolluted snow and ice from my home realm.

The soundproof barrier nipped at my skin as I pushed through it into the pantry...

And shouting filled my ears.

Sloane and Palmer were at it again.

No surprise there.

Over the last few weeks, we had come to realize when either of them was bored, they turned to each other.

To argue or challenge or push...

What they called it didn’t matter so much as the popcorn Briggs was pulling from the microwave.

“Did they just start?” I asked him, grabbing beers from the fridge.

“Literally three minutes ago.”

“Sloane?”

He snorted. “Palmer. She was in the library, minding her business while she read.”

“Damn,” I muttered.

“You made a bet with the vampire?”

“Yep.”

We silently wandered to the staircase, joining Novak, Stone, and York as they listened. This had become a bit of a bonding moment for the five of us. Instead of chasing the feuding pair around the house, we just sat and enjoyed the controlled chaos.

“Palmer,” Lo growled from the living room. “I swear to the gods—”

“You’ll what?” he snarked, though he was upstairs somewhere.

“Give me my fucking book,” she snarled from the second floor.

The mage’s laughter rang through the kitchen. “You’ve been reading all day.”

“It’s my off day,” she shouted over the banister before misting into the dining room to catch him.

He stepped out of the void beside us, rolling his amused gray eyes. “This is the third one she’s started today.”

“Not in it,” Stone stated, circling his finger around our group.

“I have six chapters left,” she dryly informed him as she appeared before us. “We can fight when I finish.”

The book disappeared from his hand, and he popped his mouth open like he was surprised. “We could fight until you find it.”

“You should be so fucking happy,” she whispered, her voice low and rasping. “That there are no phone receivers in this house, because I would absolutely hit you with it. I’m like four seconds away from throwing that lamp at you as it is.”

“I get throwing a lamp,” York cut in, rubbing his mouth to wipe his smile away. “But why a phone receiver?”

“That does feel oddly specific,” Novak added, not helping the situation at all.

Palmer snorted. “It’s in the chapter she was reading earlier... They fight, then fuck. And the main character hits one of the guys with the phone.”

“You were reading my book, you dick,” she accused.

“No,” he snapped.

“That’s why you picked shit with me.”

“No,” he repeated.

She glared at him. “I can’t fucking believe you right now.”

“What book is it?” I inquired before I could stop myself.

It wasn’t a good idea to jump into their heated conversation, but I was curious. They both read all the godsdamned time, and I’d picked up a few of the mage’s books out of curiosity.
